What It's Like

Working wildland fire is unlike any other job

The Call

Fire season typically runs June through September, but can stretch beyond that. When equipment gets dispatched, crews need to be ready to mobilize within 12–24 hours. You might be at home on a Tuesday and on a fireline in another state by Wednesday morning. That's the nature of the work β€” you have to be ready to go when the call comes.

On Assignment

Assignments typically last up to 14 days. You'll be working long shifts in remote, rugged terrain β€” often in extreme heat, smoke, and dust. The work is physically demanding and the conditions can be harsh, but there's nothing quite like the camaraderie of a fire crew and the satisfaction of doing critical work that protects communities and wildlands.

The Work

Depending on your position, you could be operating heavy equipment cutting fireline through timber, running a water tender on dusty forest roads, swamping for an excavator operator, chipping brush on a fuels reduction project, or handling logistics from the trailer. Every role is essential to the operation.

The Pay

Pay ranges from $300 to $700 per day depending on your position and qualifications. This is seasonal work β€” we can't predict exactly when equipment will be called out β€” but when it does, the pay reflects the demanding nature of the job and the commitment required to drop everything and go.
